Jamb 2011 Statistics

THE Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says more than 2,892
candidates scored above 300 in the 2011 Unified Tertiary Matriculation and Examination (UTME).

Announcing the results in Abuja on Friday, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, JAMB Registrar, said 842,941 candidates scored below 200 marks, while 584,602 scored below 300.

He said 28,069 results were rendered invalid out of the 1,493,604 candidates who registered for the examination, which, according to him, is lower than last year’s 96,451 figure.

Ojerinde explained that the invalid results were recorded as a result of the multiple shading and incomplete registration of subjects.

“We have stressed that in any examination, taking time to read and understand instructions is part of the examination. In the 2011 UTME, we have achieved a drastic reduction in the incidence of incomplete results to 28,069.

“Our target is to totally eliminate the phenomenon by drumming it to our examiners to carry out necessary checks on candidates during the examination.”

He said that 15,160 cases of examination malpractices were recorded, while 7,504 results were still pending, adding that investigation was ongoing to verify the withheld results.

Ojerinde said Imo had the highest number of applicants with more than seven per cent, while the Federal Capital Territory had the lowest number of applicants with 0.21 per cent.

He said provisions were made for visually impaired candidates and prisoners, noting that 197 inmates from Kaduna and Ikoyi prisons sat for the examinations.

The registrar said 99,195 candidates made University of Lagos their first choice, out of which only 9,507 could be admitted.

He said 89,760 candidates chose Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, while 88,177 candidates chose University of Nigeria, Nsukka.Ojerinde said the board had made arrangements for candidates to check their results online, using www.jamb.org.ng without the use of scratch cards beginning from Friday.

He commended security agents and all stakeholders in the education sector for making the exercise successful.
